Democracy Prep Makes History @ National Speech and Debate Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama

The Varsity Speech/Debate Team competed last week in Birmingham and we are proud to announce that we had TWO DUOS in the final round. Bronx Prep Scholars, Dieynaba Dieng and Manuela Ryes won SECOND PLACE overall. Bronx Prep Scholars, Tavan and Jesus also made finals, but because of a MISCALCULATION by the tab staff, they did not perform in the final but found out after the fact they INDEED made the final. They are currently working on solving the mistake and make it right. So in the end, we made history by having TWO in the top 6 in the country. In the history of the activity, this has only happened once and a first for a team from New York City. It also should be stated that Manuela and Dieynaba TIED for FIRST in the final round but placing is by overall scores throughout the tournament.

To watch the girls find out they made finals, you can watch the video here:

Congratulations to Harlem High, Marlynn Pollard who took 9th Place overall, missing the final by a few points.
We also took a middle school squad to Nationals as well. Congratulations to Sandra Boayke and Rokyatou Diaby who placed 8th in the nation. Sandra and Rokyatou also broke to quarter-finals in Storytelling and Dramatic Interp. Shout out to Fatima Kassim and Nathalie Brea on a strong showing and missing break rounds by a few points.
Shout out to Mr. Veals from Baton Rouge and Alumni Kadeem Penny and Emmanuel Cruz for chaperoning and judging.

SHOUT OUT to Varsity Coaches, Sarah Rosenberg and Norberto Troncoso for their WONDERFUL work with the Scholars.

Any Scholars interested in participating on the 2017-2018 team, try-outs this week.

August 15, 2016 | Uniform Policy Clarification

  • We are in the midst of shifting our uniform but we are going to do a slow transition as opposed to a complete shift. The standing high school and middle school uniforms have been in place at Bronx Prep for the past two years will still be allowed this upcoming school year.
  • New incoming students are to attend Bronx Prep with the new uniform requirements available for purchase at Flynn & Ohara and Ideal Uniform. www.FlynnOhara.com and www.IdealUniform.com
  • However, all of our uniform vendors will only sell the new uniforms easing you into the transition that will take place after the 2016-2017 school year. We know that for the upcoming school year, we will have two versions of the uniform for the middle and high schools. We are okay with that for this school year only.
  • Bronx Prep Leadership will meet with the different vendors in the early portion of the school year in order to determine affordable price points for all families before we fully roll out the new uniform and make it a requirement for all families. We will update you all by the end of the first trimester regarding uniforms for the 2017-2018 school year and beyond.

Wednesday, May 24th | USAgain

Bronx Prep is now a donation site for USAgain. Staff and students are now able to donate clothing, linen, shoes, textiles, bedspreads and more to those in need all over the world! The bin in the school yard, near the back end of the cafeteria.
This is a WONDERFUL opportunity for staff, parents and scholars to contribute and help those in need and help our environment. Many schools all over the world participating and I’m proud to say that Bronx Prep is now one of them! Below is a little information about their mission and how you can make your donation:

USAgain Mission

Our mission at USAgain is simple: to provide consumers with a convenient and eco-friendly option to rid themselves of excess clothing, which we divert from wasting in landfills for resale here in the US and abroad.

USAgain redistributes the discarded clothes we collect to places where there is a great need for these items, supporting the local and global economy in the process. By exporting textiles to struggling countries we generate revenue, create green jobs here in the US and abroad, and help to improve the well-being of people in America and around the world.

We’re leading the charge to encourage the re-wear, re-use and recycling of clothes and other textiles. Extending the life of clothes and shoes reduces environmental degradation from the manufacturing of new clothing and makes for a healthier planet. Through our work, we hope to encourage people to consider sensible use of our planet’s land and resources.

Together, we can work to give clothes a second life and make the world a better and cleaner place for people to live.

Drop-Off Instructions:

  • We accept clothes, shoes and household textiles regardless of condition. Household textiles include tablecloths, towels, bedding, blankets, bedspreads, etc.
  • We can’t accept mattresses, furniture, appliances, carpet, household items, toys or trash. Please do not leave these items in or around aUSAgain clothing drop box.
  • Clothes, shoes and textiles must be clean and dry and dropped off in tied plastic bags. A sturdy plastic bag protects the clothes from dirt and simplifies handling.

December 4th | December 4th is Mail Out Day

On a cold November day in 2006, Bronx Prep Charter school had it’s very first senior class of 21 scholars, collectively walk to the nearby post office to mail off their college applications. In support, the rest of the high school stood on the side cheering them on as they exited the school and out the gate. Every year since then, Bronx Prep has held this tradition…and it has grown! The entire school is outside with banners and balloons.  Alumni and former staff make guest appearances in love and support. 8 years later this is what it has grown to.
